The family is one of the most important social institutions, and the Islamic legal system has established specific rules and principles to strengthen marital relations. The jurisprudential rules governing the family play a significant role in understanding the overall structure of family law. Among these rules, the principle of ilzam (obligation) has special potential to bring Islamic denominations closer together in matters of personal status. This principle helps prevent disorder in the system arising from differences in the rulings followed by different sects, by allowing for constructive interaction and utilizing jurisprudential capacities across denominations, thus enabling their coexistence. This paper, using a descriptive-analytical method, analyzes the application of the principle of ilzam in the family system by examining the opinions of jurists from various Islamic denominations and the works of scholars in legal maxims. The principle of ilzam seeks to institutionalize divine rulings in Islamic societies by obligating followers of each denomination to abide by their own beliefs and rulings. Topics such as testimony in marriage, combining an aunt and her brother’s daughter in marriage, and the waiting period (iddah) of a divorced elderly or minor woman are among the disputed issues wherein the scope of this principle fosters proximity among Islamic denominations, reinforcing the family unit and institutionalizing adherence to Islamic rulings in matters of marriage and divorce.
